About Us
The Department of History, Mississippi State University, is a student-focused, research-extensive, Ph.D.-granting department. Its efforts concentrate in and on the history of the United States and Europe since 1650 but the department also seeks to offer undergraduate students some other aspects of the world’s history. Its graduate program focuses on four large domains—history of science, medicine and technology; environmental, agricultural and rural history; identity, especially region, race and gender; and military history and international affairs—concentrating faculty work and graduate training in those areas. MSU historians place a premium on creation of new knowledge and interpretations in the historical field. We avidly disseminate that knowledge and those and other insights to our undergraduate and graduate students, through professional organizations, and to society at large.
